Google puts Project Suncatcher satellite into orbit

CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google has placed its first Project Suncatcher prototype satellite into low Earth orbit, starting an in-space test of its artificial intelligence hardware. SpaceX launched the spacecraft on October 1 aboard its Transporter-18 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Google confirmed contact with the satellite after launch. The company said the spacecraft was operating as expected. The mission gives Google its first opportunity to evaluate Tensor Processing Unit hardware under real orbital conditions.

Project Suncatcher examines whether Google’s AI computing hardware can function reliably in the harsh environment of space. Planet developed the spacecraft platform in partnership with Google and supports the orbital research mission. The test focuses on how Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, respond to launch stress, radiation and extreme thermal conditions. Google developed TPUs as specialized processors for machine learning workloads. The satellite now allows engineers to compare laboratory testing with conditions encountered during actual spaceflight.

Google conducted extensive ground tests before sending the hardware into orbit. Engineers subjected satellite components to vibration designed to reproduce forces experienced during a rocket launch. Google also tested its Trillium-generation TPUs with proton beams at the Crocker Nuclear Laboratory at the University of California, Davis. The company reported that the processors tolerated a total ionizing radiation dose above the level expected during a five-year space mission. Those tests provided baseline data before the orbital experiment began.

Testing AI hardware under space conditions

Thermal management represents another central part of the Project Suncatcher experiment. TPUs generate substantial heat while processing AI workloads, but spacecraft cannot rely on atmospheric airflow for cooling. Google has tested systems that combine heat pipes and radiators to move heat away from computing hardware. Engineers also used thermal vacuum chambers to reproduce space-like temperature and pressure conditions on Earth. The orbital prototype now provides a real environment for measuring how those systems perform outside laboratory simulations.

Project Suncatcher also studies the energy conditions available to computing systems in low Earth orbit. Google says solar panels in suitable orbits can receive near-continuous sunlight and produce up to eight times more energy than comparable panels on Earth. The current spacecraft remains an experimental platform rather than an operational orbital data center. Its mission centers on hardware behavior, thermal control and radiation exposure. SpaceX carried the satellite alongside other payloads on its Falcon 9 Transporter-18 mission.

Project Suncatcher advances from laboratory to orbit

Google first disclosed Project Suncatcher in November 2025 as a research program focused on scalable machine learning infrastructure in space. The published system design covers solar-powered satellites, TPU computing and high-bandwidth optical communications between spacecraft. Google Research has also published technical work describing the engineering requirements behind the concept. The current satellite represents the program’s first orbital hardware test. It focuses on collecting physical performance data rather than demonstrating a complete network of interconnected computing satellites.

As of October 5, Google had confirmed that the Project Suncatcher prototype remained in contact and was operating as expected. The company had not released detailed in-orbit TPU performance results from the newly launched spacecraft. Its confirmed work therefore remains focused on collecting data from the satellite and evaluating hardware behavior in space. The October 1 launch moved Project Suncatcher from ground-based testing into an active orbital experiment, giving Google direct measurements of its AI computing technology under space conditions.
