Black Bear in Grand Teton is Euthanized After Food-Related Behavior Concerns, Park Officials Say

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – Grand Teton National Park personnel made the decision to euthanize a black bear near Delta Lake following repeated access to human food that altered its conduct. The park explained that the animal often approached visitors and became notably harder for wildlife staff to deter. After assessing the situation, managers concluded that ongoing food rewards and close encounters posed an unacceptable safety hazard for the public. The bear was tranquilized with a dart before being put down at the remote backcountry spot on Sept. 11.

Grand Teton euthanizes black bear after food access
Grand Teton urges visitors to keep human food away from bears and follow wildlife rules.

Earlier in 2026, park officials received reports of a black bear approaching people near Delta Lake. At that stage, there was insufficient information to confirm whether the animal had developed food conditioning. However, the behavior changed in the days leading up to the bear’s removal. Officials noted that the bear was seen obtaining human food multiple times while continuing to approach visitors. Despite increased surveillance and hazing efforts by wildlife personnel, the bear’s reluctance to stay away from human presence grew more pronounced.

Photographs released by Grand Teton National Park depict visitors standing mere feet from the bear near Delta Lake. Other images captured the animal investigating unattended food and gear among rocks, trees, and logs. Officials emphasized that visitors should never leave food unattended, even briefly, and instructed them to immediately secure food and belongings if a bear comes close. The carcass of the bear was flown out of the backcountry the morning after the euthanasia took place.

Human Food Can Change Bear Behavior

The National Park Service highlights food conditioning as a significant wildlife management challenge because it can cause bears to associate humans with food. Such learned behaviors may lead bears to approach campsites, trails, picnic areas, and other frequented locations. In this case, park officials explained that the repeated feeding, close approaches, and resistance to hazing by this bear indicated a serious concern. They determined that killing the animal was necessary after evaluating the bear’s conduct and available management strategies.

While relocating bears is an option for handling conflicts, the park notes that it does not always resolve the issue. Bears may return to their original territories or encounter other bears after being moved. Finding suitable locations with ample natural food sources and minimal human disturbance is also challenging. In this situation, wildlife managers decided that all other measures had been tried and that the bear posed a clear danger to safety. The park states that lethal removal is considered a last resort.

Park Reinforces Rules to Prevent Bear Encounters

Grand Teton National Park continues to warn visitors that both black bears and grizzly bears remain active across the area. Current guidelines advise staying at least 100 yards away from bears. Backcountry travelers are encouraged to hike in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray. Visitors are also instructed to keep all food and scented items properly stored when not in immediate use. These rules aim to prevent bears from associating humans with food, thereby reducing the risk of dangerous encounters for both people and wildlife.

According to the National Park Service, approximately one or two bears, mainly black bears, are lethally removed each year after other management options are exhausted. Officials note that removal happens when a bear presents a direct risk to human safety. The Delta Lake incident has brought renewed focus on proper food storage and wildlife viewing guidelines in backcountry zones. The park encourages visitors to report bear sightings and maintain safe distances during encounters to help prevent future conflicts.
