US Map Displayed by Trump Spans Canada, Mexico, and Greenland, Sparking Reactions

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump shared an image on Truth Social on Monday that depicted a large U.S. flag covering much of North America. The illustration labeled the region as “United States of America,” with Canada, Mexico, and Greenland positioned beneath the flag design. The image also appeared to extend over Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump did not include any written explanation alongside the map. It maintained labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America.

Trump's North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.
Trump’s North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.

At 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7, Trump uploaded the image via his official Truth Social account. The post did not contain any policy directives or announce any legal modifications regarding U.S. borders. Canada and Mexico remain independent nations with recognized borders, while Greenland continues to be a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Iceland remains an independent nation, and the map did not specify any process to alter these statuses or territorial arrangements.

This map followed several other geography-oriented posts made by Trump during the same Labor Day posting spree. Just minutes earlier, he shared images replacing New Mexico’s name with “New America.” In August, he promoted “Lake America” as an alternative name for Lake Ontario. His administration had already instructed federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico. Trump has also repeatedly called for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns, but both Denmark and Greenland have rejected that proposal.

Mexico Reasserts Sovereignty Following Trump’s Map

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the map by reaffirming Mexico’s sovereignty. She emphasized that Mexico remains a free, independent, and sovereign nation and would not become a colony or protectorate of another country. Her statement coincided with Mexico’s September independence celebrations. The post depicted Mexico under the same U.S. flag overlay as Canada and other neighboring regions. It did not reference any treaty, law, or agreement that affects the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

The map also depicted Canada covered by the U.S. flag. Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of Canada joining the United States during his second term. On the same day, he threatened to prevent Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from U.S. sales unless it begins manufacturing planes domestically. Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, which took effect Tuesday after trade negotiations stalled. These trade measures are separate from the map and did not alter the countries’ borders.

Greenland’s Territorial Status Remains a Disputed Issue

Greenland was also shown beneath the flag design. Trump has consistently advocated for the U.S. to acquire the Arctic territory, citing national security interests. However, Denmark and Greenland have steadfastly rejected U.S. ownership claims. On September 7, the European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership plan for Greenland, covering 2026 and 2027. Additionally, Denmark sent troops to Greenland earlier in September for Arctic training under its expanded defense initiative.

The original Truth Social map post did not include any caption or explanation. It did not specify any government action, border change, or territorial agreement. The countries and territories depicted under the U.S. flag continue to operate under their existing legal and constitutional frameworks. Mexico has publicly reaffirmed its sovereignty, and Denmark along with Greenland continue to reject U.S. claims for Greenland. Canada remains an independent sovereign nation. Trump did not include any documents or policy texts that would alter the territorial status shown on the map.
