NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – A recent global assessment reveals that combined efforts to tackle climate change and air pollution can deliver approximately $15 in economic advantages for each dollar invested. The report was issued on September 7 by the UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition. It analyzes 25 different strategies targeting major sources of emissions and pollutants. This assessment is described as the first comprehensive global evaluation of integrated climate and clean air initiatives.

Projected annual economic gains could reach 2.8% of the worldwide GDP by 2035, increasing to 4.5% in 2050 and 11.4% in 2100 if all measures are fully adopted. Without accounting for non-market welfare benefits, these actions still provide a return of about $4 for every $1 invested. The study further estimates that postponing implementation by one year could forgo more than $1.5 trillion in combined yearly benefits.
The 25 proposed measures span sectors such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. They include expanding renewable energy, boosting energy efficiency, promoting cleaner cooking and heating solutions, electric vehicle adoption, and stricter vehicle emission standards. Additional strategies target oil and gas leak detection, reducing routine venting and flaring, managing fertilizer use, livestock, rice cultivation, and crop residue burning. The package also emphasizes better waste management and cutting down on hydrofluorocarbons and other climate pollutants.
Benefits across diverse economic sectors
Air pollution remains a critical factor in economic considerations because of its impact on health and productivity. The assessment links human-caused outdoor air pollution to approximately 6.4 million premature deaths worldwide in 2025. Household air pollution is responsible for another estimated 2 million early deaths, including about 300,000 children. Outdoor pollution also contributed to 5.5 million new childhood asthma cases and 2 million new dementia diagnoses during that year.
Complete adoption of the proposed measures could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050. This total includes 96 million deaths associated with ambient air pollution. The report also forecasts hundreds of millions fewer cases of chronic disease. Immediate implementation would, compared to the baseline, cut global carbon dioxide emissions by half by 2050, reduce methane emissions by 60%, and lower several major air pollutants by approximately 70%.
Synergy between climate and health advantages
The modeled strategy suggests a potential to prevent about 0.34 degrees Celsius of global warming by 2050 and 1.4 degrees by 2100. By the end of the century, concentrations of key air pollutants could decrease by as much as 85% according to the assessment scenario. The cost of implementing these measures is estimated at roughly 0.7% of global GDP over the next ten years, gradually declining to 0.5% by the end of the century. The report also indicates that stronger supportive conditions could accelerate full implementation by as much as ten years.
The UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition announced these findings for the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. The assessment highlights institutional obstacles as key barriers to broader adoption of existing measures and estimates that overcoming these conditions could generate up to $10 trillion in savings by 2040. The results demonstrate how climate policy, air quality, health costs, and productivity are interconnected within a comprehensive economic framework covering measures already available across key sectors.
