Magnitude 5.0 Seismic Event Shakes Near Atka, Alaska, in the Aleutian Region

ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – On Saturday evening, an earthquake registering magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck in the vicinity of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, with its epicenter southeast of Atka. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded the tremor at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s origin was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with scientists estimating its depth at around 17 kilometers, or 10.6 miles.

Alaska earthquake reaches magnitude 5.0 near Atka
Seismic networks recorded the magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Atka, Alaska.

The event’s coordinates are 51.8286 degrees north and 173.2496 degrees west. Atka, situated on Atka Island within the Aleutian chain, is remote from Alaska’s major populated areas. The quake’s location is southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass, near Mount Sergief and several additional islands. This area lies within one of Alaska’s most seismically active zones, where earthquakes of varying depths occur frequently.

Compared to deeper seismic events common in the Aleutians, the magnitude 5.0 quake was relatively shallow. The ongoing seismic activity in this region results from the complex interaction of large tectonic plates beneath the North Pacific. The Pacific Plate subducts beneath the North American Plate along the Aleutian Arc, causing constant earthquake activity from the western Aleutians to mainland Alaska. Continuous monitoring by scientists is vital due to this persistent seismicity.

Frequent Seismic Activity Driven by the Aleutian Arc

The Aleutian Arc spans a significant portion of the North Pacific, forming a major boundary between tectonic plates. The downward movement of one plate beneath another, known as subduction, generates earthquakes at shallow, intermediate, and deep levels. Alaska endures thousands of earthquakes annually, many of which originate beneath or near the Aleutian Islands. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a network of seismic stations that detect ground motion, providing critical data to determine an earthquake’s location, depth, and magnitude.

The region also carries a history of significant seismic events. In 1957, a magnitude 8.6 earthquake impacted the Andreanof Islands, followed by a magnitude 8.7 event in 1965 on the Rat Islands. Additional large quakes occurred around the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. While these events varied in size and location, they are all part of the broader seismic activity associated with the active tectonic boundary beneath the Aleutian chain, distinct from Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 tremor.

Seismic Monitoring Systems Observe Alaska’s Earthquakes

Earthquakes within the Aleutians can originate from different parts of the tectonic system, some near the main plate boundary and others within the descending Pacific Plate. Shallow quakes can also develop within the crust above the boundary. The U.S. Geological Survey keeps national seismic records and reviews earthquake data across Alaska and nationwide. Regional networks supplement this by providing detailed observations from stations spread across the state’s expansive and often remote territory.

Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 event adds to the ongoing seismic history of the Aleutian Islands. Its location southeast of Atka and its 17-kilometer depth highlight the main features of the quake. Seismic stations captured the signals, enabling experts to refine the data. Alaska’s vast geographic area and active plate boundary necessitate continuous earthquake monitoring, especially in the isolated island communities along the Aleutian chain, making it an essential component of regional scientific efforts.
