This downturn followed the release of the company’s first quarterly earnings report after its June initial public offering. Investors balanced the robust revenue increase with the company’s $18.37 billion capital investment for the quarter. Notably, spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure reached $15.83 billion, a significant rise from $749 million a year earlier.

During the trading session, the stock dipped as low as $107.18 and finished nearly 20% below its IPO price of $135. SpaceX issued 638.9 million Class A shares through the offering, including the full underwriters’ option, netting approximately $85.68 billion. The shares commenced trading on Nasdaq on June 12, eventually peaking at $201.80.
The company’s second-quarter revenue reached $7.81 billion, marking a 92% increase from $4.07 billion in the same period last year. Its net loss was reduced to $541 million from about $1.01 billion, while operating losses fell to $143 million from $970 million. Adjusted EBITDA totaled $3.54 billion for the quarter.
Rising Expenses in Artificial Intelligence
The AI division brought in $2.56 billion in revenue for the quarter, a jump of 247.5% from $737 million. The increase was driven mainly by new AI services and infrastructure, which contributed $1.88 billion of the growth. Meanwhile, advertising revenue declined by $59 million during the same period. The division reported an operating loss of $1.26 billion as research and development spending surged 94.1% to $2.18 billion.
Starlink and other connectivity offerings continued to be SpaceX’s primary revenue generators. Revenue from connectivity increased 65.8% to $4.29 billion, and operating income grew 79.4% to $1.66 billion. Customer subscriber numbers expanded by 101.2%, although the average revenue per user dropped 22.4%. Additional revenue growth came from government, aviation, maritime, and enterprise sectors, contributing an extra $939 million.
Significant Share Unlocking Post-IPO
Starting August 6, as many as 911.5 million shares held by employees and early investors become eligible for sale. This amount represents roughly 6.9% of SpaceX’s 13.18 billion Class A and Class B shares outstanding. It surpasses the number of shares sold during the IPO by approximately 272.6 million. The company detailed its phased release schedule within its prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Based on the August 5 closing price, the initial unlocked segment had a notional value close to $98.7 billion. As of July 28, SpaceX reported holding 7.70 billion Class A shares and 5.49 billion Class B shares. At the end of June, the firm held $93.52 billion in cash and $6.49 billion in marketable securities. August 6 will mark the first day eligible shareholders can sell shares from the initial restricted group.
